The Briggs School houses students in grades one and two who live on the Lake Hopatcong side of Jefferson Township. There are six classes at each grade level, which provides many wonderful opportunities for collaboration and whole-grade level events throughout the year. There are also two self-contained special education classes in our building, with students from these classes frequently mainstreaming into the regular education classes.

This year we are very excited to continue working with Guided Reading and literacy centers. This differentiated instruction is fun and exciting for students and teachers, with the children learning at their appropriate instructional reading level. We have implemented a balanced literacy approach to language arts instruction, where students participate in interactive read alouds, independent and shared reading activities, word study and independent and shared writing activities daily. Teachers use a developmentally appropriate approach to teach all the core subjects, with hands-on, interactive learning occurring through much of the day.

We are looking forward to our annual Theme Day in the spring. This year our theme will be Dinusaurs. Activities and events that will occur on Theme Day are done in collaboration with community members, high school students and of course, our parents. Our fabulous PTA, who provides so much support and involvement in our school, really helps to make this day a success. The PTA also enables us to bring quality educational programs to our school, such as Red Ribbon Week activities and assemblies like Everyday Manners Today and Jenkinson's Live Penguin Show, just to name a few.
