A Message from the High School Principal:

Dear Students and Parents,

September kicks off with a wealth of activities and new initiatives.  We are continuing our Professional Learning Community (PLC) initiative once again this year. Teacher groups have been created and the staff is excited about the opportunity to collaborate, plan, and analyze student assessments in order to create the optimal environment for the classes they teach.  The September PLC meetings will be held on September 22nd and 29th.  Students with their own means of transportation may arrive by 8:00.  Period 1 begins at 8:06.  Students arriving by bus will participate in a supervised study held in the auxiliary gym.  There is no access to lockers until 8:00, so please bring what you need to study...

We are expanding the pilot program on student assessment begun last year to the entire high school.  When you access the Realtime portal for grades, you will see that every class in the high school will be graded as follows:  25% of the marking period grade will be comprised of formative assessments (the work done by students during the process of learning a concept or skill).  75% of the marking period grade will consist of summative assessments (the evaluative work at the end of a unit of learning designed to show student mastery).  There is increased communication in class regarding grading and both you and your child should fully understand how and why this approach integrates so well into our teaching and learning process.

I will lead a brief program at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday October 1st, just prior to back to school night, in the High School auditorium, to explain the features of this program and answer questions.  I will also be available during the rest of the evening for informal discussion on the subject.
