February, 2016

The time is always right to do what is right. -Martin Luther King, Jr.

As we celebrate African American History Month, here are a few facts:

Black History Month began in 1926. The month of February was chosen to coincide with the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln.

Inoculation was introduced to America by an African slave. It was introduced by Onesimus, a slave owned by Puritan church minister Cotton Mather. He told about an African tradition of infecting healthy people with a small amount of material from a sick person.

Martin Luther King Jr. improvised his “I Have a Dream Speech.” The original speech did not mention anything about his dreams, which were part of sermons that he used in the past. After saying the line, “we are not satisfied, and we will not be satisfied until justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream,” Dr. King changed his mind and spoke of his dreams of a better nation.

One in four cowboys was Black, despite the stories told in popular books and movies. In fact, it's believed that the real “Lone Ranger” was inspired by an African American man named Bass Reeves.

Potato chips were first made a black cook out of anger. In 1853, a customer complained that his French fries were too thick and not cooked enough. The chef, George Crum, cut a bunch of potatoes as thin as he could, fried them crisp. The golf tee, gas mask and modern blood bank were also invented by African Americans.
