The unique aspect of the Family and Consumer Science program is that it provides an arena for the integration of all subject areas found in the core curriculum. Students learn skills that are enduring in terms of healthy habits, advanced skill development, critical thinking and organization, which have a profound effect on them personally and on their families. Students demonstrate self-sufficiency through teamwork, achieving goals in the following areas: Foods and Nutrition, Consumerism, Sewing, and Time Management. Students will create their own tote bags and learn about simple meal planning with a major emphasis on kitchen mathematics and basic scientific principles. The grade 8 curriculum includes in depth study in the areas of foods, decision-making, and sewing construction. The foods curriculum emphasizes meal planning, preparation, product comparisons, and label reading. Responsible decision-making is emphasized, as well as family communication skills. The decision making process will be used to select a sewing project which the student will complete during the semester. Projects of varying difficulty are chosen and include wearing apparel, as well as home decorator items.
