Curriculum review and revision is an on-going process. Major revision projects occur on a five year cycle.

Five-Year Curriculum and Review Cycle

  1. Review and Research
The curriculum is reviewed to ensure it aligns with standards, remains current and relevant, and incorporates effective strategies, national trends, and best practices.

  2. Develop and Pilot
A budget for curriculum development and new materials is created and submitted in accordance with district timelines. The curriculum is developed, redesigned, or adjusted to align with standards and meet identified needs. Revisions occur at the end of the school year and during the summer. Materials are approved by the Board of Education and ordered at the start of the fiscal year (July 1) for implementation in year three. In some cases, curriculum and materials may be piloted during this phase.

  3. Implement
New or revised curriculum is introduced at the appropriate grade levels and subject areas. Teachers receive orientation and professional development to ensure successful implementation. Ongoing professional development focuses on strategies, assessments, and knowledge essential for the curriculum.

  4. Monitor
Curriculum implementation is continuously monitored. Additional professional development is provided as needed, and adjustments may be made based on observations during this phase.

  5. Evaluate and Report
Once fully implemented, the curriculum is evaluated to measure its effectiveness and success. Suggestions for improvements are presented to the District Curriculum Committee for approval. If endorsed, they are forwarded to the Board Curriculum Committee and ultimately the Board of Education for final approval.

Elementary Curriculum Councils have been established in all subject areas. The goal is to provide a forum for the teachers of Kindergarten through Grade 5.  Specifically, the task of each group is to articulate subject area curriculum among grades as detailed in our district curriculum. The councils address implementation issues and more importantly, serve as a conduit for good practices among elementary teachers.

Teachers in the secondary schools meet at the department level to discuss issues relating to curriculum and instruction in their subject area.
