Educational Programs
The Jefferson Township School District Department of Special Services offers a comprehensive range of special education programs from preschool through grade 12 to meet the needs of students with disabilities. We provide a full continuum of placement options while emphasizing student achievement.
Preschool
The district provides various classes for children ages three to five who have been identified with disabilities in communication, fine/gross motor skills, intellectual development, and/or social and emotional growth. To qualify for a special education preschool program, a child must be aged 3-5 or turning three during the academic year (the child must not qualify for kindergarten) and must be experiencing a developmental delay as measured by appropriate diagnostic instruments and procedures. A developmental delay means:
- A 33% delay in one developmental area
- A 25% delay in two or more of the following areas:
- Communication
- Social and Emotional
- Cognitive
- Adaptive
- Physical (including gross motor skills, fine motor skills, and sensory abilities such as vision and hearing)
Instruction is provided using a language-based approach that emphasizes learning through experience and play.
Grades K – 12
The district offers various programs tailored to meet the individual needs of students who require special education services. These programs include in-class support, pull-out replacement services, and self-contained special education classrooms supported by speech therapy, occupational therapy, and physical therapy. Additionally, when appropriate services cannot be provided within our schools, we collaborate with parents to place students in out-of-district regional programs.
School-to-Work Transition
The purpose of transition planning in high school is to provide classified students with career options that broaden their horizons while offering incentives for achievable goals related to their future success.
