Why Visit the Counselor

  • Why would I want to visit a school counselor?

Did you know that a child may see the school counselor for:

    •  friendship problems?
    •  help with their feelings?
    •  a school phobia?
    •  motivation to achieve?
    •  coping with fear or loss?
    •  family changes?
    •  a physical concern?
    •  learning disabilities?
    •  goal setting?
    •  conflict management?
    •  study skills

Here are several reasons a student might want to talk to our school counselor:

    •  "I'm getting picked on in school and I don't know what to do."
    •  "My best friend isn't talking to me and it's making me really sad."
    •  "I want to show you what I just made in art. I'm very proud of it."
    •  "I'm new to this school, and I'm really scared!"
    •  "When am I going to get to be in a Friendship Group?"
    •  "I just want to talk to someone who won't laugh at me."
    •  "I did a lot better on my last math test, and I'm so excited to tell someone!"
    •  "Tim, Samantha and I had a problem at recess. Can you help us work it out?"

Did you know there are many things to do in the counselor's office?
    Boys and girls can:

    •  talk about things that are important to them.
    •  use play and art media to learn about themselves and others.
    •  use puppets to help them talk about their feelings.
    •  be a part of a guidance group.
    •  just sit and think.
