Jefferson Township Middle School is located in northern Morris County in northwestern New Jersey. The school is situated between two forested parklands, the Rockaway River State Wildlife Management Area and the Mahlon Dickerson Reservation. JTMS is the only middle school in the Jefferson Township School District and educates 585 students in grades six through eight.
Our program is based on a middle school team approach where students are assigned to a grade level core academic team where they receive instruction from highly qualified teachers in language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. There is also a special educator assigned to each of the two core teams in each grade level. In addition to the core curriculum, students in 6th grade participate in an exploratory cycle program where they receive instruction in world language, STEM, robotics, family and consumer science, art, and music. Students in seventh and eighth grade choose electives that they wish to explore at a deeper level. Seventh and eighth graders also study a world language, French or Spanish daily for a full year. Students in all grades participate in physical education and health daily and have an opportunity to participate in our award winning music band and chorus programs.
In addition to our robust curriculum, JTMS provides many opportunities for students to participate in several service clubs, competition teams, and performance opportunities such as Red Cross, Project Stay Gold, Debate Team, Junior Solar Sprints competition, the Spring Musical, and Showcase talent show. JTMS also partners with community organizations such as the Jefferson Township Municipal Alliance and the Jefferson Township Education Foundation to bring guest speakers, recognition programs, social activities, and social emotional learning related programs to our students.
After school hours, on the weekends and in the summer months; our middle school also hosts many community activities and programs sponsored by our local police department, recreation department, and other community organizations. These include athletic events, scouting clubs, and the Junior Police Academy.
Finally, JTMS school has a wide-range of related services in order to meet the needs of the diverse range of learners at our school including exceptional programs for our special needs population and gifted learners. Our school counseling program has been awarded the distinction of being a Recognized ASCA Model Program (RAMP) from the American School Counselor Association (ASCA). They are one of eight schools in New Jersey who are recognized, six of those schools are in Jefferson Township.
