Social Studies Department

  • Welcome to the Social Studies Department at Jefferson Township Public Schools. Social studies is an integrated field that draws on history, political science, economics, geography, sociology, psychology and anthropology, or the human sciences, to develop a comprehensive grasp of people and their social world. The wide-range of disciplines and their integration aim towards a common goal, that of developing democratic citizens for an increasingly interdependent world. Social studies has a long history in the United States, dating back to the early 20th Century and the rise of comprehensive education for all students. Given its inherent diversity, the field is ever-evolving in concert with new research and insights developing within the allied disciplines. Successful social studies learning requires acumen with respect to reading multiple, often discordant texts from both contemporary and historical time periods, synthesizing these points of evidence in developing sound, coherent arguments, and engaging in meaningful and reflective citizen action that is locally valued and globally congruent.
