Who can apply to the academy?
The Academy for Environmental Science has a competitive admission process that is open to students in the Morris County area. **You do not need to reside in Morris county to apply. Students apply in their 8th grade year, and are encouraged to have taken Algebra 1 before entering the Academy. While completion of Algebra 1 is encouraged, it is not mandatory. At present, we have students in the academy from Warren and Sussex Counties as well.
What types of students apply to the Academy?
The Academy for Environmental Science welcomes applicants who are passionate about "making a difference while making a living". Our students are interested in the environment, but they are not limited to just the science end--they may go on to pursue degrees in law, engineering, policy and activism. The rigorous nature of the course sequence is best suited for those students who are self-motivated, hard-working and looking to stretch their thinking. Research, both in class and independent, is a key component of this program.
Where is the Academy located?
The Academy is housed inside Jefferson Township High School. JTHS is located next to the Mahlon-Dickerson Reservation (part of the Morris County Parks System) and is minutes from the Kean University Highlands Campus. These locations provide ample field experiences. Inside the high school, students have an Academy "home base", and will also benefit from all that JTHS has to offer, such as clubs, sports, music, drama etc.
What time does school start? Finish?
The school day begins at 7:35 AM and ends at 2:15 PM. Many students arrive before the official start of the day and stay after school for clubs and sports.
Is transportation provided?
Transportation is provided by the student's home district. It is up to the parent or guardian to arrange this with their home district, and it is important to recognize that pick up and drop off times will vary depending on where a student lives. Unfortunately, no late buses are provided for after-school activities.
